The existing 1800s small weatherboard cottage is relieved from its encapsulating ill-considered, poorly constructed lean-to additions of the recent past. What remains of the cottage is kept at the project’s core, its veranda reinstated and reinterpreted through contemporary lenses as an extended garden screen and connection between house and garden.

House in Balmain II uses colour as a compositional device. In its exterior palette, white and green are used to establish hierarchy, proportion and contextual resonance. Together, the palette operates as a calibrated gradient – light below, depth above.
