Our architectural response for the project creates a double courtyard home. The design centres around a new relationship with two gardens: one at the rear of the home and one at the centre.

On a compact 84sqm, south facing inner-city site, the design prioritises access to sunlight and views of open-air courtyards from every room of the home - deliberately reducing the footprint of the home to create the two garden courtyards.

The design approach was to consider the home as a finely crafted piece of joinery, as opposed to a building. Highly textural, handmade material qualities were considered for the home. The timber, tiled and glazed facades that wrap around the two courtyards have been delicately imagined to express tactility and craft. Opting for more modestly sized kitchen and living areas for the benefit of direct garden relationships and sunlight, the compact home is now light-filled, welcoming and calm.

Recently completed, our clients are tending to their newly planted gardens.
